Sustainable construction practices are a core value of Larsen and Toubro (L&T). Operating in Qatar, examples of L&T’s initiatives that promote efficient resource use, diversion of waste from landfill and recycling include the following:
1. Reuse of waste asphalt on temporary access roads as well as sharing of this asphalt waste with neighboring contractors. This both reduces the quantity of waste disposed at landfills (where capacity is under pressure) and mitigates nuisance dust caused by construction activities that can negatively impact the public.
2. Reuse of building rubble. Building rubble is crushed and reused as backfill material at excavations. This diverts the quantity of waste that would unnecessarily be disposed at landfill sites and reduces the project's resource consumption.
3. Use of abstracted groundwater for dust suppression. The multi-chamber design of the project's lagoon ensures that the quality of groundwater used for the purpose of dust suppression meets the quality requirements stipulated by the MME and PWA.
4. Examples of further diversion of waste from landfills, efficient resource consumption and reuse / recycling are as follows:
- Reuse of waste wood to construct sign boards, material storage boxes and furniture (benches / tables) for worker welfare areas;
- Recycling of plastic jersey barriers and plastic piping;
- Project awareness initiatives to reduce paper consumption including, a) Printing only double-sided, b) Collection and reuse of waste paper for various purposes such as signage for laminating; and
- Recycling of batteries.
5. L&T manages all waste streams according to Qatari Environmental Laws and international best practices.
L&T is committed to finding new ways to increase the efficiency of construction practices, promoting sustainable development, educating all staff on the importance of respecting the environment as well as each individual's responsibility to the future of Qatar, and the globe as a whole.

At Intercontinental Doha, we are collecting our used cooking oil and giving it to 3rd party companies to be recycled and used for bio fuel production.
Used cooking oils can be a serious problem for plumbing and Doha wastewater collection system. Cooking oil that’s poured down the sink - even if followed by hot water or soap, or flushed down the toilet, or put down the garbage disposal doesn’t disappear. It can gel and solidify into thick layers inside drainpipes, sewage pipelines, and sewage lift stations, constricting water flow and possibly backing up plumbing. It’s messy, smelly and costly to clean up.

During the course of Qatar Sustainability Week 2017, the New Port Project’s environmental experts will be completing the final environmental monitoring of the 139,117 mangroves which have been relocated to safety during the construction works. Since being relocated over three years ago,the mangroves have been continually surveyed to monitor their growth and survival. Similar relocation andr ehabilitation programs were implemented for corals (11,595) and seagrass(14,257 m2) during Hamad Port construction. Hamad Port also committed to the sustainability of the built environmentthough the construction of over 100 certified sustainable buildings, diverting over 70,000 tonnes of construction waste away from landfill, performing over 8500 emissions tests, etc. The consideration of sustainability concepts has extended to each of environmental, social, and economic aspects. Join 365 Adventures as we plan on a massive beach and desert clean-up drive along with a coal recycling program.
The problem:
During the camping season, thousands of campers leave the dunes messy with trash and lots of coals. It comes up to a point where it shows in the pictures that tourists take and does not reflect good on the society we are living in!
Solution:
Let's act smart and wise and take initiative in making sure that not only this does not happen again, but also, people are aware of what they can do with trash once they camp. We are proposing following solutions:
1) Clean-up the dune that has trash (general plastic bags, papers, cans etc) and put them altogether at one place for MMUP trucks to come and take them.
2) Organize the coal that is split across several parts of dunes to one spot as a pile; so campers can spot it as a coal dumping spot; as well as; campers that run out of coal can also take the used coal and reuse it again (yes! it is reusable)
3) Raise awareness and have a great day out as we catch the sunset at the Inland Sea after a great day of work-out!
Itinerary:
On 31st October, we will gather at the Sealine Beach at 1PM
2PM - 2:30PM: Depart from Sealine Beach Resort to clean-up spot (deep in the desert)
3PM - 5PM: Clean-up activity
5PM - 6PM: Swimming and sunset at Inland Sea
7PM: Return to Sealine Beach Resort

This adventure is free of cost if you have your own car, and if you do not, you would need to pay a minimum of 180 QAR for transportation.

Shams Generation (Shams is Arabic for sun), is QSTec's multi-award winning solar learning and sustainability initiative for primary years students right through to university level. This hands-on learning experience has reached over 10,000 students in 20 schools across Qatar. Students use solar learning kits that are supplied by QSTec to create amazing works of solar art that combine light, movement and recycled materials. Shams Generation hosts several exhibitions per year of the student's amazing solar artworks in addition to holding public workshops where students can design their own solar art pieces.
Through Shams Generation we are encouraging our future solar energy leaders to develop an understanding of solar applications and sustainability that will stay with them for their entire lives.

Nearly zero-energy buildings have very high energyperformance and are introducing renewable energy sources. In order to achieve anear zero energy building (near-ZEB), the challenges have to be understood fromthe concept design. This means, in order to achieve a holistic developmentoutcome, the designers and project management has to understand the stages tobe followed in order for all the design elements be optimized.
This Evening Lecture will cover the principles by:
Providing a starting point for a near-ZEB definition;
Outlining the main challenges and potential solutions;

Lean construction
Construction is normally an adversarial and challenging industry asstakeholders have conflicting interests. New paradigms for generating value(lean construction) can have significant and positive impacts on projects,especially mega-projects with long timeframes, many stakeholders, and highrisks. In the simplest terms, the objective of Lean Construction is tooptimize value by maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste.
Mr. Sabek will introduce the concepts of Lean Construction. Furthermore, Mr. Sabek will present his research in exploring “CoordinationChallenges of Lean Production Planning and Control in Mega Projects”. Real lean construction application in Qatar resulting in QAR 300 million ofhard saving will be presented.
With successful implementation of Lean Construction, projects nolonger have to be over budget, delayed, or frustrating to the client and otherstakeholders. Exploiting such opportunities require lean thinking towardsleadership, practice, and culture at every level of the organization throughoutproject lifecycle.

Afterliving in Doha for a number of years a person might ponder if Doha’sinhabitants - officials and non-officials alike - can see any evidence of aclear integrated zeitgeist that has actually shaped the City’sdevelopment, its form and its character. Looking back, Doha’s growthsince the 1950s seems to have been moulded only in response to severaldiverse, often-competing, drivers and visions, with little integrated andinspiring thought to provide a lead.
Consideringthe city as an entity for a moment, it could be said that it has not yetreached a state of consciousness. While planning has been largelyresponsive and pragmatic, no unified vision has been put forward thatrests easily and agreeably in the minds of its residents. While boldexperiments have been built, like West Bay, the Pearl andLusail, these have been singular and unconnectedin character and have largely turned their backs to the existingcity. As yet, no clear unified vision for the city springs tomind when contemplating Doha’s current urbanrealm. This workshop and discussion seeks to address this lack ofconsciousness by posing the following four insightful questions.

The trip will include several stops: 1) A dune overlook of the inland sea to orient the trip discuss the large-scale natural processes that form this stark landscape. 2) A stop at the Inland Sea shoreline to discover the secrets of microbial marine mats. 3) A lunch stop near the Inland Sea Delta.Wading is encouraged. 4) A visit to sand mounds that host a 6000 year old mollusk deposit. 5) A stop at a 125,000 year old outcrop of Pleistocene rock toget sense for the environments here at that time. 6) A stop and short walk to a“salt flat” where gypsum and halite crystals can be found at surface. This stop is optional, and also dependent on recent weather (if it rains prior to our arrival- the salt will not be there).

Join 365 Adventures as we plan on a massive beach and desert clean-up drive along with a coal recycling program.
The problem:
During the camping season, thousands of campers leave the dunes messy with trash and lots of coals. It comes up to a point where it shows in the pictures that tourists take and does not reflect good on the society we are living in!
Solution:
Let's act smart and wise and take initiative in making sure that not only this does not happen again, but also, people are aware of what they can do with trash once they camp. We are proposing following solutions:
1) Clean-up the dune that has trash (general plastic bags, papers, cans etc) and put them altogether at one place for MMUP trucks to come and take them.
2) Organize the coal that is split across several parts of dunes to one spot as a pile; so campers can spot it as a coal dumping spot; as well as; campers that run out of coal can also take the used coal and reuse it again (yes! it is reusable)
3) Raise awareness and have a great day out as we catch the sunset at the Inland Sea after a great day of work-out!

On 31st October, we will gather at the Sealine Beach at 1PM
2PM - 2:30PM: Depart from Sealine Beach Resort to clean-up spot (deep in the desert)
3PM - 5PM: Clean-up activity
5PM - 6PM: Swimming and sunset at Inland Sea
7PM: Return to Sealine Beach Resort
